Coaching as a tool can be compelling for managers to get their Teams on board to meet the department’s needs. It becomes useful and needed when managers apply the Coaching TGROW model (Topic, Goal, Reality, Options, Way Forward) to structure conversations, ensure clarity on the area of focus, setting specific goals, evaluating the current reality, exploring various options, and establishing a concrete way forward.

The Path to Coaching Mastery and Breakthroughs

Like any skills that needs to be sharpened, as coaches we need to practice the art of coaching. I am working towards meeting the 100 hrs I need to complete my ICF coaching certification. The journey has been immensely rewarding as I take the steps to clock in the hours.

In the last coaching session I was able to achieve breakthroughs by getting the “coachee” to see perspectives of her assumptions. For instance as corporate executives taking a step out approach towards wanting to set up their own consulting business can be daunting. The toughest hill to climb is to get clients. I go through this process every week, after having set up my own consulting practice. As coaches we always refrain from giving advice and answers. A good coach provides good questions that will allow “coachee’s” to reassess their assumptions and perspectives. Is it real, is it true, where are the facts, and why am I taking this approach. As a practising coach, to get these breakthroughs reaffirms my own practice as a coach. I have always been guided by a model to apply the knowledge I have gained. The coaching model TGROW is one I use.

Questions that you can use as a coach

The coaching habit, questions

The certification process that requires one to attain 100 hrs of coaching sessions is a good one. It has forced us to take the bold step to sharpen our skills as a coach. In the process I have realised I am helping others too. As you look at the consultants who have attained the ICF certifications, do not lose hope or feel you are slow. Take the steps to become a master coach in what you do and in the process help others along the way. I have detailed 7 questions that you can adopt in your next coaching session.
