In today’s complex organisations, even the most brilliant minds can struggle—not because of a lack of expertise, but because of how teams work together across silos.

At Teamworkbound, we have worked with a group of lead scientists from the Genome Institute of Singapore—individuals trained at some of the world’s top universities, deeply specialised in biological sciences, and operating at the cutting edge of research. Not once, but 3 times in a row. This includes lead Investigators, senior management teams and scientists.

Yet, like many high-performing organisations, they faced a familiar challenge:

How do we align expertise, break silos, and execute strategy together?

The Reality: Expertise Does Not Equal Alignment

In knowledge-driven environments, teams often operate in deep vertical expertise:

  • Research teams focus on discovery

  • Data teams focus on analytics

  • Operations teams focus on execution

But strategy fails when:

  • Communication stays within silos

  • Assumptions are not challenged

  • There is no shared ownership of outcomes

This is where experiential learning becomes powerful.

Our Approach: Designing for Deep Work and Real Collaboration

At Teamworkbound, we do not run “activities”—we design learning experiences that mirror real organisational challenges.

In this programme, participants were immersed in a simulation-based challenge that required them to:

  • Work across disciplines

  • Build strategy under pressure

  • Align on priorities and trade-offs

  • Translate ideas into actionable plans

The result?

Teams moved from:

  • “My research” → “Our shared mission”

  • “My expertise” → “Our combined capability”

Making Thinking Visible: Strategy in Action

One of the most powerful aspects of the session was externalising thinking.

Teams created:

  • Strategy maps

  • Project timelines (Gantt-style thinking)

  • Decision frameworks

  • Innovation pipelines

This does two things:

  1. Makes abstract thinking visible and debatable

  2. Builds shared ownership of decisions

When teams see their strategy, they can refine it, challenge it, and most importantly—commit to it.

Enhancing Team Performance with Belbin Team Roles

While experiential learning creates the environment, tools like Belbin Team Roles (Singapore and Asia Pacific) provide the language and structure to sustain performance.

In high-performing scientific teams, we often see:

  • Strong Specialists (deep expertise)

  • Natural Plants (innovators and idea generators)

  • Emerging Monitor Evaluators (critical thinkers)

However, teams may lack:

  • Coordinators to align direction

  • Implementers to translate ideas into action

  • Completer Finishers to drive execution quality

By introducing Belbin, teams can:

  • Understand their natural roles and blind spots

  • Build balanced team compositions

  • Improve decision-making and execution

This shifts teams from:

“We are all smart individuals”
to
“We are a strategically aligned team.”

Beyond the Workshop: Walking Away with Strategy

What makes this programme different is not just the experience—it’s the outcomes.

Participants walked away with:

  • Clearer strategic alignment across teams

  • Practical action plans they can implement immediately

  • Greater awareness of how they collaborate and lead

  • A shared understanding of what success looks like together

Why This Matters for Organisations in Singapore and Asia

In fast-moving, knowledge-intensive environments across Singapore and the Asia-Pacific region, organisations are asking:

  • How do we integrate expertise across functions?

  • How do we execute strategy faster?

  • How do we build leadership at every level?

The answer lies in combining:

  • Experiential team building

  • Diagnostic tools (e.g., Belbin, Everything DiSC)

  • Real-world strategy application

Final Thought: From Individuals to Impact

The Genome Institute session reinforced a powerful truth:

High-performing teams are not built by chance—they are designed.

When you bring together:

  • Deep expertise

  • Structured collaboration

  • The right tools and frameworks

You don’t just build teams.

You build capability, alignment, and impact.
